5) TIE:
T."Annie".N, et al. – “Boss Introduction Theme”
from
Mega Man 7
This one’s memorable.
The same theme has been used in tons of Mega Man games,
including the very first one. The screen goes black, the boss shows up
with his name underneath, and this awesome tune plays. To be specific,
I prefer the one from Mega Man 7.

TIE: Betrayer – “Fever”
from Dr. Mario
Beautifully orchestrated by the New
Japanese Philharmonic on Nintendo Power’s bonus CD, this catchy little
tune plays during the “Fever” in the NES puzzle game Doctor Mario.
Classic all the way.

4) Setsuo, et al. - “Zero’s Theme”
from MegaMan X
This awesome riff plays when Zero arrives in MegaMan X, both
times featuring Zero using his awesome weapons to bail X out. Another
display of Capcom’s impressive musical talent. The tune matches so
well with Zero's 'cool' aura and rock star hair. This tune sticks
with me even from my younger days, and I often hum it when I'm
gathering courage to do something (i.e., ask my boss for a day off).

3) Koji Kondo – “Kakariko Village theme”
from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Another tune that has
seen more than one game, I prefer the classic version from SNES’s Link
to the Past. It’s a great, melancholy, autumnal tune, at a smooth,
relaxing pace. It always chokes me up just a little bit to listen to
it...

2) “Outdoor Theme”
from MegaMan Battle Network
I know it’s a little recent, but I love this tune. I often
loitered outside for ten or twenty minutes at a time while playing
just to hear this tune. I even started to make up lyrics, although
that didn’t work out so well. It’s and upbeat, happy tune, that I
whistle a lot.
1) Koji Kondo – “Overworld Theme”
from The Legend of Zelda
Best. Theme. Ever. Having seen even more reproductions than #3, this
is easily the most memorable tune of my entire video gaming career.
Sure, new beefed up versions are present in Ocarina of Time and
Super Smash Bros. Melee (as well as on that orchestrated CD),
but I’ll never forget playing Zelda on my original NES and humming
along to this one. As I look at other submissions from everyone else,
it occurs to me that my own picks are a little...well, old. That fact
is emphasized in Overworld Theme, the oldest on my list, being number
one. But what can I say, I remember the NES-SNES era as the golden age
of gaming. Before all the hype, nudey volleyball games, and flashy
graphics (and flashy music) took center stage over gameplay, when it
wasn't Microsoft and Sony, just little old Nintendo and Sega duking it
out (sorry PS2/Xbox fanboys), I remember nothing but great games, and
more than anything else, the wonderfully orchestrated, catchy tunes of
those games stick with me today.
