Developing for GBA?
December
28, 2000
For
the past month or two various rumors have surfaced indicating that
Sega planned on developing for the Game Boy Advance. Thus far
these rumors have been totally unsubstantiated (which is why we
haven't printed them)...until now.
Reuters
is reporting that an unnamed source within Nintendo has indicated that
Sega will develop for the Game Boy Advance. As a business
move this would make sense for Sega: the GBA really isn't a competitor
to Sega's Dreamcast, and GBA development would be a natural
progression from the other platforms (such as wireless phones) Sega
has already begun development on. In addition to that, Sega has
past experience in handheld development with their Game Gear. Sega is facing very tough
times, and developing for the GBA would be an easy way to help offset
their ever-increasing debt.
Even if this
ultimately proves to be false, something is definitely happening between
Sega and Nintendo. In addition to the GBA rumors, a report in the
NY Times this week indicated that Nintendo is considering purchasing
Sega for $2 billion.
Could it be
that Sega will be developing for the GBA...but only after Nintendo have
purchased the company? Whatever happens, we'll keep you informed.
