Back in 1994, I went on one of my routine arcade trips
and saw this new game called Cruis'n USA. And I liked it. It wasn't the awesome
game that Daytona USA was, but it was still fun. After playing for a
while, I noticed it was made (partly) by Nintendo. From then on, I knew
that this game was destined for the Nintendo 64 (or Ultra 64 as it was called
then). Little did I know that it could turn out so bad.

The point of the game is to go from San Francisco to
Washington DC. You spend about 1/3 of the time in California alone. It's
fun to race by national monuments, yet they seem a little out of place (Mount
Rushmore is set in a field). If you do, you get a faster version of your
car (or a better term would be a different color car). There are four regular
cars plus three hidden cars. While it's fun to drive as a school bus, it
gets drab after about two seconds
The biggest problem is the pop up that also plagued the
arcade version, but make the N64 game virtually unplayable. They don't even
use fog to mask it. You drive straight thinking that this road is going to
keep going straight, but at the last second, the turn pops up, and you end
up hitting a wall. Not to mention the fact that the control is
so loose it would be unplayable even without the pop up.
The graphics don't seem to use much of the N64's capabilities. When you knock
over a tree, it doesn't fall down. It just appears on the ground, flat like
a steam roller rolled over it. The music is about as annoying as the pop
up.
It's a wonder that Nintendo sent this game back instead of releasing it on
September 30 with the other games. I don't see how this game could get any
worse. The quality guard must've had a great snooze as this crept by.
Overall: 3.3
