Thank you Goldeneye 007 for saving the corridor shooter
genre from becoming one of the deadest out there. Instead of bloodbaths and
mindless shooting and finding keys like 99% of the other corridor shooters
out there, Goldeneye tries to attempt something better. And it succeeds greatly.
You have to carefully think of how you are going to do each task. If you
have to sneak into a building, you have to move quietly and dodge guards
or at least take them out quietly. If you fail to do so, he might ring an
alarm or call for help. Then, you'll have some trouble on your hands. If
you are running through a place and there are civilians, you probably don't
want to take them out 'cause otherwise you'll have to do the level over again.
Not exactly Turok, huh?

The levels are great looking, although there is a little
polygon breakup. The designers even show off a little bit with one level
taking place in a foggy night. The fog, however, is not there to cover up
pop up just to show how much Rare knew about the Nintendo 64. The levels
are nicely sized also and faithfully represent the movie. If you want to
get through these levels, I'd suggest you use the Turok control scheme (the
second one), or you'll have a tough time aiming.
The weapons are impressive. This is probably the only corridor shooter
in which you actually use all the weapons. Instead of futuristic gizmos
that don't do much, you have handguns, Klobbs, and sniper rifles, each fit
for their own jobs. In addition, there are several gadgets you use such as
magnetic watches and timed bombs.
The four player mode is definitely more
polished than Hexen. You have several modes of play so you won't get bored
at all (playing Man with the Golden Gun is a good way to get players to explore
the levels).

All in all, this was a great game. It lived up to all the hype. You can't
go wrong with it.
Overall: 9.4
