Quite a while ago, there was a game called Heretic in the beginning of
the Doom clone craze. It was fun and all, but it wasn't the greatest. Then
came its sequel, Hexen for the PC. Ditto for Hexen. Now, several years later,
we are treated to a PC port of a game that is expecting a sequel soon?
Let's just say that the multiplayer mode saved this game from an even lower
rating. A game that can easily be associated with this is Doom on the Super
NES. When Doom was brought to the Super NES, everything was flawed in the
game. The graphics were pixelated beyond belief, the control made you feel
like you were walking on ice, and the game was just not fun to play because
the Super NES just wasn't powerful enough to do a good version of Doom. The
only difference here is that Hexen should've easily been ported to the N64
given how much more advanced the N64 is over a three year old PC.
Since graphics are a good place to start, we'll start there. The graphics
are terrible. Like Doom 64, the 2D sprites have maybe two frames of animation
at most, and there is tons of pop-in. At most, the sound is less than average.
The control is much like Doom 64's. It's slippery and nowhere near as good
as it could've been. And with it being very easy to get lost in these hectic
mazes, you'll be wishing that they could've tightened up the control.
One of the nice things about Hexen is the choice of characters. After playing
as space marines for a long time, it's nice to play as a cleric, fighter,
or mage for a while. They are slightly different but not enough to make you
feel if you played the game again it would be different.
Now the multiplayer mode in Hexen is what saves the game.
With Doom 64 and Turok being one player attempts, it sure is good being able
to play what we've been waiting for. However, with Goldeneye coming out with
a (supposedly much better) four player mode, getting Hexen purely for a
multiplayer experience just doesn't make any sense.
Hexen is exactly what the Nintendo 64 was NOT made for. It is simply pathetic.
Overall: 4.1
