While not as perfect as the other game released with the Nintendo 64, Pilot
Wings delivers a solid game playing experience. Let's get right into it.
First, let's start with the graphics, which are some of the better quality.
The game moves smoothly, and you can actually tell if you are a quality
photo-journalist when you take the pictures.
The control is simple, if not great. Real wind factors can be felt with the
hang glider, and you can feel the launch of the rocket pack. Simple, easy
control: often consisting of a gas button and left and right or up and down
movements.
There's a deep curve to the challenge. First, it is a good idea to memorize
the placement of the rings/platforms before you try to accomplish anything.
Otherwise, you might find that you lose out on a medal thanks to getting
lost. The first levels should help you get used to the controls, and you
should be getting 100's there in no time. Then, after that is a severe challenge,
as the next levels get really hard, so you can expect a little less than
100. After, that it gets VERY HARD. Yep, but after practice, you should be
able to finish even those levels because of skill, not luck.
Besides playing with a Gyrocopter, Hang Glider, and a Rocket Pack, you can
play with other toys such as jumping shoes, a cannon, and bird wings. They
present difficulties like the others. As to why they are bonus vehicles and
not just the regular thing escapes me, but that's okay I guess. This is a
great game. Not as great as Mario, but hey it's two different genres here.
This is a game of skill and not of luck. You won't beat it in one day.
Overall: 8.6
