Rumble Pak
Review By: Jared Black
Developer:   Nintendo

Back when the Rumble Pak was initially announced, many scoffed at the idea. Of course, most would agree that force-feedback on a console was something that was long overdue. Few thought that a little plug-in to the controller would be the solution. Well, now that the Rumble Pak is finally out (included with Star Fox 64, and to be sold separately as well), I can honestly say that this was a very GOOD IDEA! The Rumble Pak reads information which is sent from the game (each game must be programmed for it, hence no rumbling in earlier games such as Mario Kart 64) and vibrates according to the instructions it receives. So, what does that mean to the gamer? In Starfox 64, whenever you are hit with enemy fire, the controller vibrates. It also vibrates when you turbo boost, and when you crash. Depending on how hard you are hit, the Rumble Pak responds by vibrating to varying degrees. It's pretty cool!

Overall, the Rumble Pak is a great addition to the gaming experience. It allows you to become more immersed in the game than ever (especially with Starfox's visuals). It allows you to feel the game without distracting you from the game or jerking the controller from your hands. Force-feedback on a console for $20??? Great idea!

Overall: 8/10
