Late Wednesday night IGNcube tore open its Japanese import copy of Soul Calibur II for Nintendo's next-generation console and has barely stopped playing for a minute since. The game, which isn't scheduled to come out in the US for five months, is not only one of the best 3D fighters in a long while, but also one of the most import friendly.

The word 'polish' immediately comes to mind when trying to describe Namco's Soul Calibur 2 for GCN. The fighter moves at a frantic pace, but never drops from 60 frames per second. It proudly boasts intuitive and satisfyingly tight control mechanics that work surprisingly well whether one uses the GameCube D-Pad or analog stick to manipulate and maneuver. It runs in progressive scan mode. It runs in 16x9 widescreen mode. It runs in Dolby Pro Logic II. It's beautiful. And, at least for some, the only thing in the end that really matters: it's got some serious Link love, too.

Nintendo's mascot character debuts in Namco's franchise in shining good form. The character's full list of moves are available, including everything from throwing the boomerang at foes to tossing bombs, shooting the bow and arrow, and using the master sword to pull off damaging spin attacks, death blows and more. It's clear that Link hasn't been added to the game as an afterthought, which is something that's sure to please Zelda and Nintendo fanatics alike.

Link's advanced moves set:

Bow and arrow: A + Y, Y
Bomb: B + X, X
Boomerang: A + X, A
Spin Attack: down, lower left, left +A
Rocket Attack: Up + B
Hopping Attack: Down + B
Grass Cutter: Lower left (upper left) + A
Propeller Kick: Down (up) + X
