A Retrospective Look at the Gunjin Battlefield

#1

Post by Bad Dragonite » Tue Mar 20, 2018 7:32 pm

[*]You know I've never quite seen an to format pop up quite like the Gunjin Battlefield and I remember it being alot of fun and a great way to flex creative muscles that I don't think alot of people who participated knew that they had. Even though alot of them were kids at the time I think it was overall a positive influence back then when it was active and it could just be plain fun coming up with new ideas for characters and writing out a story with another person or even multiple in a sort of, "gamified," environment without the sane types of restrictions as most RPGs like EnD. Do any of you ever go back at look through it for old time's sake? I'm curious.

I remember playing once, and I think I godmodded, or maybe just lost the fight, and then got embarrassed and quit.

I really like Battlefield but didn't participate as much as I'd have liked to, it was daunting since I can't write very well and many others could. I still dipped into it a bit anyway. Once in a great while I'll take a peek at the archives, it was a cool forum. It makes me miss the Nintendoland Death Battles too.

I had a dream once that Gunjin was revived but I came to the forums way too late to actually participate in the real thing.

I never posted there, exactly. I did a couple of battle posts on Tubs's Night Club site once with 314. I probably wasn't very good.

I enjoy reading through what I have saved, every once in a while. Reminiscing can get quite emotional though... ;) :D

I don’t read the Gunjin archives because I’m afraid I’ll see something that 9-year-olf me posted and yeah no thanks.

I have fond memories of the Gunjin myself, and I've never seen anything quite like it, except the concept of "Brawling," from the Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game. I'd love to participate in something similar at some point. Though personally I'd prefer some kind of ruleset to be used, though a pretty freeform one like FUDGE.

I also like the adventure roleplays we used to do, though I admit I wasn't all that great at them at the time.

I never really understood how it worked. Was there anything other than the honor system stopping someone from just writing "and then your character had a heart attack and died, so I winz"?

I made a thread there when I was real young and didn't really understand the concept and tried to like enforce health bars and stuff lol. I kinda like the idea now though.

e: ^ it's just collaborative storytelling, really. kinda like dnd but simpler

Well, that wouldn't be very fun now would it?

Scrolling through the Gunjin memorial forum makes me so nostalgic... I wish the posts had imported better, all my battles only have my own posts saved sadly, but man. Right in the feels. Never seen anything like that before or since, honestly.

I believe there was some talk about that a while back. I'm not sure who said it, which mod or whomever, but I think I they said if there was sufficient interest the Gunjin could make a return.

I mean, the battles were judged on writing ability primarily, so if you just said "I throw you into the sun lmao now you're dead," you wouldn't score well. And people wouldn't really want to battle you.

Believe me, this is coming from someone who was writing in the Battlefield at the age of, like, 10. I shudder to look back on what I posted in there at the time, and I ask forgiveness from everyone who had to read my garbage.

I just kinda want forum search to come back so I can filter on posts made by myself in that specific forum.
