Boss Fight Books

DISCLAIMER: I'm not employed by Boss Fight Books in anyway. This isn't an ad, this is just my own personal endorsement because I think a lot of VGFers will enjoy these books.

Boss Fight Books is an independent publisher that produces full-sized books that dive deep into certain video games. Each author takes a different approach--some want to re-tell the story, some want to do research into the game's development, some want to tell personal stories that relate to their game. Whatever angle the author takes, though, it's worth reading.

Here's the list of books:

1. Earthbound
2. Chrono Trigger
3. ZZT
4. Galaga
5. Jagged Alliance 2
6. Super Mario Bros. 2
7. Bible Adventures
8. Baldur's Gate 2
9. Metal Gear Solid
10. Shadow of the Colossus
11. Spelunky
12. World of Warcraft
13. Super Mario Bros. 3
14. Mega Man 3
15. Soft & Cuddly
16. Kingdom Hearts II
17. Katamari Damacy
18. Final Fantasy V
19. Shovel Knight
20. NBA Jam
21. Knights of the Old Republic
22. Postal

Each book runs about $15, but they also have bundles that are worth checking out. I myself bought the JRPG Bundle and am very satisfied with what I've been reading.

Here are those:
by platform

NES Bundle: Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Bible Adventures, Mega Man 3

PC Bundle: ZZT, Baldur's Gate II, Spelunky, World of Warcraft

by genre

JRPG Bundle: EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy V

Platformer Bundle: Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 3, Spelunky, Bible Adventures

by emphasis

Historical Bundle: Jagged Alliance 2, Soft & Cuddly, Spelunky, Mega Man 3

Personal Bundle: EarthBound, World of Warcraft, Baldur's Gate II, Galaga

Critical Deep Dive Bundle: Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts II, Shadow of the Colossus

Creator Access Bundle: Spelunky, Jagged Alliance 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy V

by reputation

Top-Rated (on Goodreads and Amazon) Bundle: Spelunky, Mega Man 3, ZZT, Bible Adventures

Bestsellers Bundle: Spelunky, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid, Shadow of the Colossus
I thought some of you would really enjoy these. I think they're worth checking out. I was a little disappointed in the Chrono Trigger book, but I'm glad I read it. The Earthbound and FFV books have been fantastic, though.

Too bad the Chrono Trigger book was disappointing, that's probably the one I'd be most interested in. What was wrong with it?

Might look into the Earthbound one.

Hmmm. I'm reminded of Worlds of Power. I had the 'Castlevania' and 'Wizards and Warriors' books when I was a stupid little kid. Wonder what ever happened to them.

It’s really clear that the author has a lot of love for Chrono Trigger, but it’s as if he’s trying to convince himself and the reader to dislike the game for the entire book. He goes out of his way to point out flaws and, in my opinion, create issues that aren’t really there. I was hoping for more of a dive into the development cycle, or details about the writing. Didn’t get that.

The best part of the book by far, though, is the interviews with Ted Woolsey (SNES Translator) and Tom Slattery (DS Translator). They redeemed the book, as far as I’m concerned. But honestly, IRHP, you’d hate it. Sorry.

PSA that Humble has all of these in a bundle for $15 right now. I read the MGS and Bible Adventures ones during my 15 hours of flying yesterday and enjoyed both of them.

Oh, awesome. I’m not a big E-Book guy, but I might buy in at the $1 tier for the 10% off code. Hmm.
